Beeswax is a mixture of more than 300 different compounds and minerals, including 15 independent chemical components. Scientists have found out that beeswax contains 70,4 - 74,7% of esters of monohydric alcohols and fatty acids; from 13.5 to 15% of free acids; from 12,5 to 15,5% of saturated hydrocarbons. In addition to these components, beeswax also contains pigments and odorous substances that determine its color and fragrance.
Beeswax has long been consumed for medicinal purposes. Since ancient times, people have known about anti-inflammatory, wound healing and demulcent properties of the wax. The Roman historian Pliny, for example, wrote: 'All sorts of wax have the ability to soften and warm, as well as the ability to heal the body.'
In folk medicine, the wax is used to treat such conditions as:
- Wound healing
- Burns, sun burns and insect bites
- Digestion problems
- Gums and teeth plaque
- Inflammation of the maxillary sinus
- Asthma
- Hay fever
- Allergic rhinitis
To treat the above conditions, it is usually recommended to chew beeswax 5-6 times a day for about 15-20 minutes.
In addition to its medicinal use, beeswax is widely used in cosmetics. Millions of plasters, ointments and creams contain beeswax. It is used in nutrient, astringent, cleansing, whitening creams, and facial masks.
Beeswax is also used in different industries, including metallurgy, aircraft, optical, leather, electrical, wood processing, printing, glass, paper, textile and others. Many church candles are made from beeswax.
Furthermore, beeswax is very popular in the modern confectionery industry, where a diversity of sweets (e.g. gummy bears, worms and jelly beans) use the wax for its culinary properties.
