Black Cohosh Root Extract is a powerful antioxidant mainly used for feminine type disorders treatment. Indian women of North America used black cohosh root as a remedy for menstrual disorders, during labors and menopause. Black Cohosh Root Extract is used to relieve symptoms arising during menopause: hot flashes, headaches, heart palpitations, sleep disorders, irritability, vertigo, and depression. Among other homeopathic remedies, black cohosh root extract is used for muscular pains and spastic cardiac and gastro-intestinal pains.
The main medicinal importance of black cohosh lies in its root--fresh or dried. Its components have the effect similar to estrogen; that is why black cohosh has found a wide application in gynecology. It is still not clear, how many of the many components of the plant have medical value.

What Is Black Cohosh?
Black cohosh, also known as Actaea racemosa or Cimifuga racemosa is commonly found in North America. It is an evergreen plant of the family Ranunculaceae. The plant has been widely used by indigenous inhabitants of the continent to treat numerous diseases, including gynecological disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Black cohosh should not be confused with blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides), which is a more toxic medicinal plant, also used for the treatment of gynecological disorders. In modern medicine, black cohosh root is widely used for correction of menopause and climacteric syndrome, to treat insomnia and depression. Many experts attribute the therapeutic effect of the plant to its estrogenic properties, however the issue remains controversial and needs more scientific evidence.

According to the recommendations by German Commission of Experts in Herbal Medicine, black cohosh root can be used in the treatment of menstrual cycle disorders. Black cohosh is a vegetable abortifacient, and therefore its use during pregnancy and lactation is potentially dangerous.

Historical Uses of Black Cohosh
For centuries, black cohosh root has been used by Native Americans to treat gynecological disorders, malaria, sore throat, rheumatism, malaise, kidney disorders, and snake bites. In addition, it was used for colds, hives, backache, and to induce lactation. It was also used as a ceremonial herb that brings visions.

Since 19th century, black cohosh root has been prescribed for lung diseases, neurologic conditions, rheumatism and “women’s problems” such as menstrual problems, potential miscarriage, infertility, inflammation of ovaries or the uterus, and for pain relief during the labor.

Modern Medicinal Use
Modern medicinal usage of Black Cohosh Root Extract include:
• Menstrual cycle disorders
• Neurologic conditions
• Arthritis (as an analgesic in combination with the bark of white willow and poplar)
• Obstetrics
• Breast Cancer

Safety During Pregnancy
• Childbirth - the security level is 4
• Hormonal correction (black cohosh root has a potentially estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects) - the security level is 4
• Stimulation of menstruation (especially in the first trimester) – the security level is 4
• Anovulation - the level of security is 4.

Studies show that Black Cohosh Root Extract has labor- stimulating effect. The extract combined with other herbs like raspberries, blue cohosh, and yellow hellebore is widely used during the third trimester of pregnancy to prepare the future mother for the labor. The problem of hormonal activity of the plant remains open; however, given the results of in vitro studies in plants, the scientists recommend to avoid the use of cimicifugosides during pregnancy until a more detailed research.
Several studies show that Black Cohosh Root Extract can stimulate menstruation; that is why it should be avoided during pregnancy.

Pharmacology
Some in vitro researches of black cohosh root found its ability to bind estrogen receptors; however in some other cases, the effect of the phytoestrogen was not detected. In vitro, cimicifugoside inhibits cell proliferation induced by estradiol, showing its anti-estrogenic effect.
Black cohosh reduces the level of luteinizing hormone, but does not affect the level of follicle-stimulating hormone. The plant has been shown to suppress the growth of cancer cells in patients with breast cancer and has anti-inflammatory effects.

Dosage and Administration
Black Cohosh Root Extract can be taken orally. The usual dosage is 1 to 2 droppersful 3 times a day. May be mixed with juice or water if desired.

Black Cohosh Root Side Effects
Being a natural herbal extract, Black Cohosh Root Extract has little side effects. Breast-feeding or pregnant women should avoid taking Black Cohosh Root Extract. Women with breast cancer should take black cohosh with caution as its impact on the breast tissue is not fully understood and more research is required.
