Also known as Valeriana officinalis. Valerianaceae. Stimulating antispasmodic, tonic, nervine (sedative), anodyne, cathartic, diaphoretic, antithermic, diuretic (lithotriptic), aromatic, carminative.

Valerian is powerfully antispasmodic in its effect upon the system. It is gently stimulating, very soothing and quieting to the nervous system. Valerian is an effective calmative. It inences circulation by slowing the action of the heart, while increasing its force; therefore it has been very beneficial in cases of cardiac (heart) palpitation. Potter\'s Cyclopaedia indicates that valerian may be given in all cases to allay pain and promote sleep. It is strongly nervine without any narcotic effects, and enters into various herbal nervine and antispasmodic compounds. Valerian produces an exhilarating sensation, and is especially useful for young and delicate women as an hysteria remedy with emmenagogue. Besides acting upon the circulatory system, it stimulates secretion and peristalsis of the stomach and intestines. Valerian is an excellent anti-flatulent for infants and for hysterical and hypochondriacal subjects. It heals ulcerated stomachs and is powerful in preventing fermentation.

Valerians have similar appearances. They all form upright stems, 1-3 feet tall, with one or more sets of opposite leaves along the stem. The compound leaves are strongly divided and pinnate. The lower ones are toothed and have a pea pod scent. The pale pink to rose or whitish flowers have a honey scent and grow in tight clusters. The calyx, when in flower, becomes a feathery pappus at the top of the fruit. Found in temperate parts of the world.

The musky root is used in stews, and perfumes. It is a antispasmodic, calminative, nerve ionic, and sedative. Root preparations are used to help induce sleep, give a calming effect on stomach spasms, epileptic fits, hypochondria, depression, insomnia, nervous headaches, hysterics, and restlessness. A tea of the root, 1/2 cup, used in the bath or vapor bath encourages restful sleep. Externally, it is used for ulcers, eczema, wounds. Do not take continuously or in large doses.
